Prior to laser treatment, red birthmarks could not
be treated, and were a major cosmetic defect for children who were
born with these obvious birthmarks. Because red birthmarks are made
up of many small veins, they are treated in the same way as facial
veins. Greatly improved laser technology, has revolutionized treatment
of these birthmarks.
|
Which
lasers are used for treating red birthmarks? |
The
Photoderm, is one of the most successful treatments for birthmarks,
with a post operative healing time of 5 - 7 days. Fewer treatments
are needed compared to the older laser technologies.
|
When
is the best time to treat red birthmarks? |
Red
birthmarks usually become darker and more raised as time goes on,
if treatment does not occur immediately. Therefore, it is best to
treat these birth marks as soon as possible. Babies may be treated
safely.
|
How
many treatments are needed to remove a birthmark? |
The
number of treatments will depend on the darkness of the birthmark,
the darker lesions require more treatments. Most people need at least
5 treatments for optimal results. The first 2 or 3 treatments will
produce the most dramatic improvements. Treatments should be placed
4 to 8 weeks apart to allow your body to remove the maximum amount
of pigment cells. You will continue to see a lightening of your lesion
after each treatment as your body disposes of the pigment cells.
|
What
Are the Alternatives to Laser Treatment? |
Chemical
peels with glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid and phenol have been
successfully used for many years to selectively smooth the outer layers
of skin. Mechanically sanding down the skin, known as dermabrasion
has been used just as long.
|
I've
Heard That Laser Treatment Is far Superior and Doesn't Ever Leave
any Redness of the Skin or Scarring. Is This True? |
The
depth of the laser burn is probably more predictable than that of
chemical peels or dermabrasion. The laser strength and exposure time
to the skin can be precisely controlled. However, the body's tissue
reaction to the laser cannot always be predicted for a particular
patient. Erythema, redness or scarring can last from several weeks
to a couple of months regardless of the method used. On rare occasions
scarring can be permanent.
|
How
much lightening of the birthmark may be expected? |
Most
birthmarks will lighten at least 75%, some may light by 95%
